Hi Everyone. Well it's been a little while since we polled who would be interested in a Strayer Family vacation in 2010, but we have 14 potential partakers. Not a bad number to start with! So, the next thing is to figure out where to plan it. So be sure to add you vote to the poll on the right hand side of the Blog. Also, if you have another thought on where, please post it on the Blog and I can add it.

Images from the philippines

Here are some images from the Philippines. You'll see the famous Jeepney and the little boy hanging off the end of it as they frequently hitch a free ride (very dangerous of course). There is alos one photo of a woman standing on her roof to hang up clothes and the photo where you see a line of green small vehicles are called Tricycles - another form of public transportation either motored by a bicycle or motorbike that can carry two-three passengers. In Indonesia they also have these but they are pulled by foot!
Miss you all,
much love,
Linda

News from Manila

Hi Everybody,

Well, we've been here for 10 days now and I'm loving the warm temperatures. Having left Paris when it was -10°, you can understand my contentment. Our session is going fine. 18 participants from 7 different countries - India, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Fiji, Cameroun, and Australia. I get a walk every afternoon after lunch and the food is healthy too - lots of rice and fish. Yum..............

The Philipppines is a land of contrasts, and though we have seen a few very luxuriant enclaves, the majority of Filipinos are poor. Today we travelled 20 minutes by Jeepney ( a story for next time - and maybe a photo) to the city dump. 70 000 people live there and scavenge what they can find from the mountains of trash. The stench is horrific but the people there welcomed us warmly and we celebrated our Sunday Mass with them in a small chapel at the base of a large rubish heap. Two of our MSC priests minister in the parish that includes the city dump and they are also involved in helping some of the residents to get a home and employment away from that place. They have a program whereby teenagers can finish high school and be employed by businesses in Greater Manila. It was very sad for us to see so many people living like this
and the visit there today has left a deep impression on all of us.

We don't have good internet connection here but fortunately the portable computer that I'm using is equipped with WiFi. I'm out on the balcony of my room siting with the laptop and hooking into the signal from the neighbor, who must have installed WiFi in their house. Lucky me.

Will write again next Sunday.

Much love to all,
Linda

Happy Birthday, Paul!

Today the PA local Strayers gathered to celebrate Pauly's 14th birthday. The kid made out pretty good - scored a lot of dough!

The highlight of the day, however, was a little game we all played called "Last Word". Let me lay out the premise of the game: It's similar to Scattegories, but no writing. Each player receives a "subject card". The card might read something like, "The name of a store" or "Things about Thanksgiving". The the "co-ordinator" (Big Stevie) would reveal a new letter each round and start a randomly timed timer upon the start of each new round. The person to call out the last appropriate word before the timer sounds "wins" that round. Here are some highlights:

1. Aunt Kathy - The round was for names of stores that start with "D". Halfway thru the round, Aunt Kathy screams "Walnuts!". No idea. Also, when the letter "P" was announced, she emphatically offered up her subject as the round, which was "Things made of paper". She immediately answered, "PAPER!!!" Interesting.

2. Aunt Mare - Apparently she had some trouble thinking of her own answers, because after anyone said a word, she'd follow up with the same word, only LOUDER and FASTER as though she just thought of it herself. We called her Jimmy Two Times today.

3. My Mother - Aunt Gini's strategy was to immediately volunteer her subject, even if she didn't have an answer for that letter yet. She "strategically" would very slowly announce the subject on her card, trying to give herself enough time to think of an answer. She actually thought we couldn't tell what she was doing. Hilarious.

4. Aunt Donna - Poor AD, after about 10 rounds we hear, "I HAVEN'T WON ONE SINGLE ROUND!" She "pouted". But then she scored some wicked points.

5. Pauly - Now, don't get me wrong, he had some GREAT answers. For example during "Things about Thanksgiving (letter "S") he shouts out "Saturated Fat!". Touche! However, when he was first to announce the subject, he never, ever, ever declared the subject, only his answer. So then you had 6 Strayers staring at him with a dumb face wondering, "Huh?" until he realized he didn't tell us the subject. This happened NO LESS than 20 times. You'd think he'd learn, but...he is a Strayer.

Some other highlights - Aunt Kathy talked to (not by ear, but by eyes) to my Mom's blackberry phone because "well I thought it was a little TV!" she said. Wow. Also - when Dayna didn't answer the phone on the first call, she pondered, "Where is Dayna!? She always answers her phone??" Then my mom says to her, "Maybe she's in the shower?" and AK looks like she totally understands now, as she nods & declares, "Yes...it is Saturday..." WHAT!?!?!?

All in all - a classic day. Bubbers wore some awesome new Nike's and was kissed no less than 4,000 times by middle-aged Strayer women fighting for him incessantly. Poor kid!

I absolutely LOVE our family.

Hi Everyone! Well, the holiday's are behind us and the New Year is beginning. I wish everyone the best year ever! We had a good Christmas in Florida and loved having Mom here with us. Jenn topped the Christmas Dinner with her Santa cake, which was chocolate with coconut topping, her dad's favorite. Check out the picture.

Addison debuted in her Christmas dress, which she wore for about 10 minutes on Christmas day! But she looked really cute in it. We found a new game (Bri - it's the one we got you for Christmas), The Big Taboo. We had a blast....especially playing with Mom. You'll have to go easy on the timer with her, especially when she's drawing. It's a true piece of art for her! I'm thrilled with my Wii and Wii Fit. I've only gotten as far as making my Mii but I'm looking forward to using it soon; once things settle down a bit and I get all of the house put back together. Here's some pictures of Addison. Once I get some from Christmas I'll post them too.

And you have to check out this picture of Addison running away from Santa. I couldn't even get her close! She was scramblng to get away. But she looked real cute in her shades. Luckily we didn't wait in any long lines. We actually rode in the golf cart up to the town center where Santa visits each year.
She calmed down once we were back at the house.
Well today was a busy day....We went for facials and massages today (Christmas presents!) and than Mom and I took Debbie, Keith and Dayna to register at BabiesRus. So be sure to check out what the twins are going to need!! Her shower is going to be in February when Kathy and Cliff are here.

Well that's all for now. Love you all and Happy New Year!
